Dear Members of the Recreational Sports Community,
This a call to action!
As someone deeply invested in the future of recreational sports, I to address the challenges we baseball and softball are experiencing. We must keep baseball and softball relevant for 10 to 11 months out of the year. The recent changes imposed by the Parks Department in NYC have profound implications not only for our sport but for the entire recreational community.
The Current Crisis
Recent actions by the Parks Department have included the reclassification of Dewitt Clinton Park, an oval park with three dedicated baseball/softball fields. This reclassification on paper led to a reduction in available softball play from 7 days and nights a week to just two.
These changes are part of new rules the Parks Department has now imposed on the recreational sports community citywide.
The new policies are not only reducing access and limiting playing time it also forcing organisers to term people away.
This lack of transparency in the permitting process and the decision-making framework has led to a sense of injustice and division among the sports organizations. Could be part of the plan, which is why are looking to organize the sports community so organization from all sports become part of the sulution.
Emotional and Community Impact
The impact of these changes is deeply personal for many of us.
Baseball and softball are more than just games; they are integral to our community and personal lives. The current situation is worsening the divisions within our sports communities is widening and the targeting of any sports is should bit happen or be tolerated. It is critical that we address these issues collectively and advocate for a more inclusive and transparent process.
Proposed Solution for Fair Equity
To resolve these issues and ensure fair access for all sports, I propose the following solution:
Equitable Field Allocation: Ensure that sports requiring rectangular fields are allocated permits for dedicated rectangular fields. This will prevent the unnecessary strain on deadicated baseball and softball fields, specifically designed and built for these sports.
Preservation of Field Integrity: Using baseball/softball fields for rectangular sports causes significant wear and tear, leading to costly repairs and a shorter lifespan for the fields. Proper field allocation will help maintain preserve field integrity and the quality of all playing surfaces, reducing maintenance and replacement costs
3.
Formation of an Oversight Committee: Expand the City Council Parks Oversight Committee to include an advisory group of respected and trusted community recreational sports ambassadors from every affected sport. This committee will provide recommendations and ensure that decisionsbeing made about field allocation and policy changes are made with input from those who would be directly affected.
